Course Details:
Wednesdays, 9:30am – 11:20am Spring Quarter (April – June 2025), In-Person plus discussion session 11:30am – 12:30pm following the class weeks 2-9.
Position Description:
The Teaching Assistant (TA) will work to support the course manager, Yosefa Gilon, with various tasks outlined below. In addition, the TA will work with the course instructors, Dr. Geoffrey Tabin and Dr. Michele Barry. The TA will be hired at 20% time, working a total of 8 hours per week (including class meeting times). Applicants must be current students at Stanford University (position open to graduate and undergraduate students).
The Teaching Assistant’s responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Course content and teaching
- Updating and maintaining course website on Canvas
- Producing and managing a weekly speaker evaluation and a mid-quarter evaluation
- Assistance in sourcing and preparing teaching materials, preparing lecture slides, and occasionally presenting slides on behalf of course instructors and guest lecturers.
- Weekly office hours with students on an as-needed basis to discuss their progress on the projects centered around a critical issue in global health.
- Attending all course lectures (9:30 am – 11:20 am PT on Wednesdays).
- Attend and facilitate discussion sessions weeks 2-9 on Wednesdays 11:30am – 12:30pm.
- Attending weekly meetings with course instructors and the course manager.
- Compile student photos and bios into a PPT presentation that can be shared with the class and with project mentors and speakers.
- Weekly Canvas reminders for students as well as specific announcements related to assignments or other course elements.
- Tracking student attendance and participation.
- Providing input for grading assignments and posting grades to Canvas.
Course logistics
- Email guest speakers with class details and location. Gather pre-lecture readings, bios, speaker release forms, and slides.
- Manage thank you emails to speakers.
- Arrive early to class to ensure that the classroom (in-person and online) is prepared for class, including speaker readiness, all audio-video, and any other logistic and functional requirements. Help follow any classroom usage rules, including resetting space after class.
Opportunities and Benefits:
This position is an excellent professional opportunity, as the TA will work directly with the Senior Associate Dean for Global Health and Professor of Ophthalmology and Co-Founder of the Himalayan Cataract Project. If interested, the TA may work with Dr. Barry and Dr. Tabin on curriculum development for the following year’s course.
Skills and Abilities:
- Detail-oriented and a strong self-starter, able to follow tasks through to completion with little supervision.
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong interest in global health and health equity
- Able to commit to 8 hours per week (including class meeting times)
- Previous experience as a TA is preferred

Compensation:
Compensation: For undergraduates, it will be commensurate with experience and will follow the Student Wage Scales set by the University. For graduate students, the pay will be consistent with the Minimum Assistantship Salary Table.
